Supporting Your Path to Building Fluent Readers
Istation’s Indicators of Progress (ISIP) Oral Reading Fluency (ORF) is a cutting-edge assessment that uses voice recognition technology to automatically measure oral reading fluency for elementary students in grades K-5. Students make recordings of themselves reading grade-leveled passages, which then pass through carefully calibrated acoustic models in order to produce auto-scores. Teachers can make immediate data-driven decisions from color-coded reports based on the Hasbrouck & Tindal (2017) national norms. Recordings are available for review in an online archive, and teachers have the ability to override auto-scores at any time using the manual scoring interface.
Developed in partnership with Boulder Learning, Inc., ISIP ORF leverages state-of-the-art innovations in voice recognition and digital recording technology specifically designed for young, nascent readers.

ISIP ORF Overview
Decades of research show that oral reading is closely correlated to reading comprehension and predictive of success on state assessments. Therefore, oral reading fluency data can be used to determine which students are at risk (screener) and to evaluate the efficacy of interventions (progress monitor).

District Administration® and FETC® named ISIP ORF one of the Top Ed Tech Products of the Year in 2020. With over 160 submissions, this contest recognizes the most innovative new solutions on the market that are helping school leaders meet their ever-evolving education technology needs. The 2020 panel of judges placed particular emphasis on solutions that were either designed or adapted to address the needs of the remote learning environment, calling ISIP ORF a "Powerful AI-driven oral reading fluency assessment tool" and "a time saver for teachers."
ISIP ORF: Fast, Fun, and Reliable
For Educators
Saves Teachers Time
ISIP ORF saves teachers time. It can be group administered, which means it can assess an entire class in under 10 minutes. Teachers have access to an online archive so they can review student recordings at their convenience and even share them during parent-teacher conferences. Color-coded reports facilitate data-driven decisions to inform instruction, and a built-in notes feature allows teachers to record observations and perform additional analysis. Since the assessment can be administered remotely, teachers can continue collecting data even in periods of distance learning.
Consistent, Unbiased Data for Administrators
ISIP ORF makes it easy to compare performance between classes, schools, and even districts. The program provides a uniform experience, so all students are encouraged to read naturally rather than for speed. Moreover, auto-scoring supplies consistent, unbiased data, which minimizes human variation based on experience or training.
For Students
Engaging User Experience
ISIP ORF doesn’t feel like an assessment. Students are invited into a virtual recording studio where they get to play the role of a voice actor in a recording session. The sound engineer guides them through the experience, encouraging them to read naturally. Students complete a quick microphone check before reading three short, grade-leveled passages. The digital assessment is private, so students are not pressured to perform in front of their teacher or class.
Equitable Assessment Design
ISIP ORF is an effective resource for all students who receive English language arts instruction in English. The acoustic models allow for a wide range of dialects and accents because they have been carefully trained on large, diverse samples including regions with a high percentage of English-language learners.

ISIP ORF in Spanish

ISIP ORF is now available in Spanish for elementary students in grades K-5. Students can record themselves reading authentic, grade-leveled passages, which teachers can score at their convenience using the manual scoring interface. All passages were developed in Spanish — not transadapted from English. They were leveled using multiple readability scales, and there are enough passages for monthly progress monitoring without students ever seeing repeats.
ISIP ORF for Distance Learning
Students can record passages at home, making it possible to continue benchmarking and progress monitoring even if they cannot be in the classroom. Teachers can access these recordings in an online archive, allowing them to check in on their students while they are apart. Data collected from ISIP ORF can be used to examine the extent of learning loss and even evaluate the efficacy of various remote instructional models.
